Zionism is an ideology.
Not a religion.
Not a culture.
Not an ethnicity.
An ideology that permits and defends a supremacist state.
I would never condone anti-Semitism.
'Semitism' refers to the cultural, ethnic, and linguistic traits associated with Semitic-speaking peoples - communities historically connected through languages, such as Hebrew, Arabic, and Aramaic, across North Africa and West Asia (often called the 'Middle East', a colonial term).
Anti-Semitism is real, dangerous, and must be opposed.
Zionism, however, is an ideology, as stated above. A dangerous ideology.
It is a strange time to be in Queensland, where legislation in the near future may effectively enshrine the conflation of anti-Zionism with anti-Semitism: a move that feels less about protecting people and more about protecting power.
Conflating criticism of an ideology with hatred of a people does not fight anti-Semitism.
In fact, I would argue that conflating the two may be one of the most anti-Semitic things you can do.
